Vocabulary Learning Tips PART 1

How to learn some new vocabulary? That's easy!

1.REPEAT!
To ensure the words stick in your memory, test yourself on them at regular intervals. If you learn some new words in the morning for example, check that you can still remember them later that day, the next day, a week later and a month later. If you find some words hard to recall, try thinking up different associations for them. You may need to try several different associations before you find one that works.

2.LEARN IN A CONTEXT
Learning long lists of unrelated words is boring, difficult and does not help you much when you come across those words in a different context. If you focus on learning words in the context you're most likely to find them, you are more likely to recognise them when you encounter them or need to use them again.

3.READ!
Most vocabulary words are learned from context. The more words you are exposed to, the better vocabulary you will have. While you read, pay your attention to words you don't know. First, try to figure out their meanings from context. Then look the words up. Read and listen to challenging material so that you'll be exposed to many new words.

4.WORK WITH YOUR DICTIONARY
If you have a dictionary program on your computer, keep it open and handy. You can find a lot online dictionaries Find them and look up any word you are not absolutely sure of. Use a thesaurus when you write to find the word that fits best.
