The essential point is to encounter a topic which is quite interesting for you. I like to read about new cultures and cuisines. It helps me to find a lot of new vocabulary, ideas, informations and pleasure.
The most important things that you need are: a good book with tapes and a dictionary. If you have it, you can easly start. There are a lot of benefits of doing exercises in your life, but you can not forget about speaking.
Most of books have only a few pages about grammar, that you can finish it in less than no time, and still have a superficial overview of the biggest parts of the language.
Listen!
If you listen to many songs then you will start to get familiar with the tunes and probably like particular ones. When you actually like some of song it will make it a lot easier to try to learn it and sing along later. If you can sing along to some songs, this will be a nice icebreaker to use new structures and vacabulary .
If Prince William can sing ..........why not to try ;)
